What food helps dogs stop vomiting?

The best food for dogs who are nauseous or vomiting is a bland, highly-digestible diet, with low fat and low fibre. Some things that may be given are boiled chicken and rice, boiled eggs, pumpkin, curd (if well-tolerated previously), etc. The key to help dogs who are vomiting is to stop the gag reflex from being triggered.

Why does this matter?

  • Highly digestible food breaks down easily in the gut and is absorbed.

  • It puts less load on the already sensitive digestive system and the food residue is also minimal, leaving less matter that may be expelled.

  • Easily digestible food also causes less fermentation, reducing gas and irritation.

What do vets generally agree on?

The bland diet of lean protein and easily digestible carbs is something that most vets agree on. In fact, a short period of fasting (4–24 hrs in stable adult dogs) and slow re-introduction of food afterwards is also a common way of handling vomiting in dogs. Feeding should be done every 2–4 hours and gradually increased if the vomiting stops.

When to be careful?

Vomiting is a symptom, not a disease. So, figuring out the cause of vomiting is very important. Sometimes, it may just be them eating something bad or getting indigestion, etc. At other times, vomiting may be a sign of other issues, such as pancreatitis, foreign body obstruction, infections (e.g., parvo in puppies), chronic enteropathy, etc. If vomiting persists beyond 24 hours or if it happens more than 2–3 times in 24 hours, it is best to consult a vet. During such times, BLEP Chicken Rice Fresh Dog Food can be a good choice because of its high digestibility.
