Key takeaways
-
Normal shedding never leaves bare skin. Bald, red or scaly patches are hair loss, a sign of an underlying problem.
-
Flea allergy is the most common cause of symmetrical hair loss in cats, even when no fleas are visible.
-
India has no single shedding season. Shedding peaks in north Indian summers, and monsoon humidity raises the risk of ringworm, which spreads to people.
-
Hair loss on the belly and legs usually means overgrooming from itching or pain, including bladder discomfort.
-
Brush long coats daily and short coats weekly, use flea control year-round, and see a vet for any bald patch.

Cat hair fall reason: shedding or hair loss?
Shedding is normal coat replacement: old hairs fall as new ones grow. Hair loss (alopecia) is the partial or complete lack of hair where it normally grows, and the Merck Veterinary Manual calls it a sign, not a diagnosis.

Shedding season for cats in India
India has no single shedding season. Most cats follow the weather where they live.
|
Season |
Months |
What happens to the coat |
Watch for |
|
Summer |
March to June |
Heavy shedding in north and central India as the winter undercoat drops |
Mats in long-haired cats, heat stress |
|
Monsoon |
June to September |
Moderate shedding |
Ringworm and damp, matted coats |
|
Winter |
November to February |
Thicker coat in the north, less shedding |
Dry, flaky skin |
Coastal cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi and Kolkata stay humid most of the year. Fungi thrive in hot, humid climates, and a review in Veterinary Dermatology lists India among warm regions with higher ringworm rates.
Air-conditioned homes: cats under steady AC and indoor lighting tend to shed lightly all year instead of in one seasonal wave.
Fleas and ticks: warm temperatures keep parasites active year-round in most of India, so flea control is not just a summer job.
Breed: Persians and Himalayans shed the most and need daily brushing. Long coats and Persian breeds are also linked to higher ringworm risk. Short-coated Indian Indie cats shed less and need weekly brushing.

Common cat hair fall reasons
According to Merck, flea allergy dermatitis is the most common cause of hair loss on both sides of a cat's body.
•Flea allergy: a few bites can trigger intense itching, even without a visible infestation.
•Ringworm: a fungal infection, not a worm. Look for scaly, often round patches on the face, ears or paws. In a Kerala study, 36 of 82 cats with skin lesions had it.
•Mites: ear mites cause dark ear debris and head scratching; Demodex mites cause patchy loss.
•Environmental allergies: dust mites and pollen, often seasonal.
•Food allergies: year-round itching, often around the head and neck.
•Pain: cats lick over sore spots, and bladder inflammation can lead to a bald lower belly.
• Hyperthyroidism: older cats, usually over 10, with an unkempt coat and weight loss despite a big appetite.
•Stress: a move, new pet or new baby can trigger overgrooming.
•Life stage: coat thinning during pregnancy and nursing, after illness, or in senior cats who groom less.
Why is my cat losing hair on her belly and legs?
The belly and inner thighs are the easiest places for a cat to lick, so they thin first when something itches or hurts. The usual causes are flea allergy, food or environmental allergy, and bladder discomfort.
Short, stubbly hair means she is licking it off, often in private. If she is also straining or peeing often, see a vet the same day.

Three checks you can do at home
1. Flea comb test: run a fine flea comb along her back and tail base over white paper.
2. Wet paper towel test: tap any black specks onto a damp white paper towel. If they turn reddish brown, it is flea dirt (digested blood).
3. Overgrooming check: look for stubble, saliva-stained fur, more hairballs, or licking one spot repeatedly.
Found round, scaly patches? Keep children and other pets away and book a vet visit, as it may be ringworm.
Home treatment for cat hair loss
Home care supports the coat but cannot cure the cause of bald patches.
•Brush on schedule: the RSPCA recommends daily brushing for long and medium coats and weekly for short coats, more in peak shedding months.
•Dry the coat in monsoon: towel off a damp cat and keep bedding dry.
•Use flea control year-round: choose a vet-approved product and treat every pet in the home.
•Skip human remedies: no human creams or essential oils. Cats lick them off.
How food supports a healthy cat coat
Hair is mostly keratin, a protein, so a dull, shedding coat often reflects diet. BLEP fresh cat food is meat-first, grain-free and made with zero preservatives or added sugar.

For coat support, start with the fish recipes: Mackerel Makarena, Slurpy Sardines or Tun-Tuna. For an added shot of collagen and hydration, add chicken or lamb bone broth as a topper.
Give a new diet 6 to 8 weeks before judging the coat, since hair grows in cycles. Food supports the coat but does not treat fleas, ringworm or disease.

Cat hair loss patches treatment: when to see a vet
Treatment depends on the cause: flea control for flea allergy, antifungals for ringworm, a diet trial for food allergy, or medication for hyperthyroidism. A vet may use a skin scraping, fungal culture or blood tests to find it.
Book a visit within a few days if patches spread or look red and scaly. Go the same day if your cat stops eating or strains to pee.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is cat hair loss contagious to humans?
Only when ringworm causes it. It spreads by touch, and a Kolkata study found it in pets and their owners. Wash hands after handling your cat and vacuum often.
Do indoor cats shed more with AC?
Not more overall, but steady temperatures mean they shed a little all year rather than in one heavy season.
Which cat breeds shed the most in India?
Persians, Himalayans and Maine Coons. Indian Indie cats shed moderately.
How do I check my cat for fleas at home?
Comb her over white paper, then press any specks onto a damp paper towel. Reddish brown means flea dirt.
How long does a diet change take to improve the coat?
About 6 to 8 weeks, as new hair replaces old.
