Key takeaways
-
Dogs feel heat, humidity, air pressure and seasonal allergens. Puppies, seniors and flat-faced breeds are most at risk.
-
Weather rarely makes a dog sick directly, but it raises the risk of heatstroke in summer, tick fever and leptospirosis in the monsoon, and joint pain in winter.
-
On a 25°C day, sunlit asphalt can reach about 51°C, hot enough to burn paws.
-
Paw licking and ear scratching in the monsoon are common signs of dog seasonal allergies or moisture-related infection.
-
Storm anxiety is real stress: one study recorded a 207% rise in cortisol in dogs exposed to thunderstorm sounds.
Do dogs feel weather changes?
Yes. Dogs respond to heat, humidity, air pressure and seasonal allergens, and many sense a storm before we do. Dogs don't sweat across their bodies, so they cool down mainly by panting, which makes heat harder on them than on us.
Four groups struggle most: puppies, senior dogs, dogs with heart, lung or joint problems, and flat-faced breeds such as pugs, shih tzus and French bulldogs, which are popular in Indian cities and pant less efficiently.

Can change in weather make a dog sick?
Not directly, but each season creates conditions for specific illnesses. Heat causes dehydration and heatstroke. Monsoon floodwater sometimes carries leptospirosis, spread through rat urine, and ticks carrying tick fever multiply in warm, humid months.
See a vet the same day if your dog collapses, struggles to breathe, has bright red or pale gums, or has repeated vomiting or diarrhoea. Our pet first aid guide covers what to do on the way.
Summer: heat stress and paw burns
Watch for heavy panting, thick drool, bright red gums, weakness or stumbling. Never leave a dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
On a 25°C day, sunlit asphalt can reach about 51°C, hot enough to burn paws in under a minute. The American Kennel Club suggests pressing the back of your hand to the ground for seven seconds before a walk.
BLEP fresh dog food is gently cooked and moisture-rich, and BLEP bone broths help dogs who don't drink enough water get the extra moisture they need. Our dog hydration guide lists daily water needs by weight.

Monsoon: dog seasonal allergies, ticks and leptospirosis
Signs of dog seasonal allergies include paw licking, ear scratching, red skin and recurring ear infections. Mould and pollen cause them as often as food does.
Leptospirosis is the bigger threat. In a 2024 Chennai study, 42 of 102 dogs tested positive, many for strains not covered by common vaccines. Keep dogs out of floodwater and ask your vet about boosters before June.
BLEP SUPER Gut Booster gut supplement for dogs combines probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics, digestive enzymes and gut-soothing botanicals to support digestive balance through the season.
Winter: stiff joints and smoggy air
Senior dogs, small breeds and short-coated dogs feel cold mornings most. Look for stiffness after rest, slow starts on walks and reluctance to go out early.
In Delhi and much of north India, winter also brings smog. On days when the AQI is high, keep walks short and skip hard exercise.
For seniors and joint-issue-prone breeds like Labradors, start support before stiffness shows. BLEP SUPER Joint Booster contains Type II collagen, glucosamine, green-lipped mussel and other joint-friendly ingredients that protect cartilage, reduce inflammation and pain, and help keep your dog flexible. Use it alongside your vet's advice.
Storms and fireworks: when weather affects behaviour
Thunderstorm phobia is one of the most common anxiety conditions in dogs. Dogs react to falling air pressure, static in their coat, low rumbles we can't hear and the smell of rain, so many panic before the first thunderclap. Signs include pacing, trembling, hiding and clinging. Diwali fireworks trigger the same response.
Set up a quiet safe space, play background noise and keep routines steady. Our fireworks pet safety guide covers the setup step by step.
BLEP SUPER Stress Buster calming supplement for dogs supports calm without sedation, using L-theanine, L-tryptophan, magnesium glycinate and other calming ingredients. Give it 60 to 90 minutes before a forecast storm or festival night.

Three quick checks you can do at home
-
Gum check: press a gum until it turns pale. Pink should return within two seconds. Slow return or dark red gums in heat need a vet.
-
Tick check: run your fingers over ears, neck, armpits and between toes daily in the monsoon.
-
Paw and ear check: look for redness, odour or discharge after wet walks.
BLEP support for every season
No food, broth or supplement replaces vaccines, tick control or a vet visit, but the right support helps dogs handle seasonal strain.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can dogs sense a storm before it arrives?
Often, yes. They pick up pressure drops and low rumbles before we hear thunder.
Is the leptospirosis vaccine enough during the monsoon?
It helps, but not every strain is covered. Keep your dog away from floodwater too.
Does air pollution affect dogs?
Yes. Smog irritates airways, especially in flat-faced and senior dogs.
When should I see a vet during seasonal changes?
For itching lasting over a week, fever after a tick bite, breathing trouble or collapse.
